As a life coach, I spend much of my time helping clients gain skills and removing roadblocks.
What is a roadblock? A roadblock is anything that blocks your ability to move forward or prevents you from reaching your goal or plan. There are many types of road blocks. One of the most common ones is our beliefs. What is a belief? One definition says that it is "acceptance that something is true". Note, there is nothing in that definition that says the belief is in fact true…just that we accept it as true. A belief is a thought that you let live inside you. It colors the way you see the world and the values you hold dear. It determines how you react to people and information. Overcoming erroneous yet closely held beliefs can be difficult. If we don’t recognize we have a roadblock in our beliefs, we may feel stuck for no reason. Let's look at some ways we have come to have beliefs that have turned out not to be true. Most of us may have grown up thinking we have five senses. The truth is there are as many as 30. This information can give us more tools to gain insight in to our life and our choices. Another fact many of us have come to take for granted, is that it takes 21 days to solidify a habit. This theory has been tested. We have learned through studies that the time it takes is much longer than many of us have been led to believe. It can take a person as little as 21 days to “hardwire” a new habit in to their brain or it could take a year. Each person is different and reacts differently in each circumstance. Why does this matter? It matters because one of the things that makes us keep up our momentum when turning our goals in to plans, is the belief that it is possible to make change in our life. If I think it should take me a week to accomplish something, that is the expectation I have of myself. If it takes less, I’m happy but if I am still struggling and nowhere near my goal a month later, it may cause me to feel like giving up. Especially, if I am working on something particularly difficult to me. Part of the process of coaching is to help a person set up the foundation for success. One of the ways that is accomplished is to help remove whatever may be in the way. This can only be done if we recognize something is hindering us. A coach does this by asking the questions necessary for the roadblock to be revealed. When the block is an erroneous belief, it can be freeing to toss it aside and move forward. If you are feeling stuck in any area of your life, you may want to ask yourself…..Could it be an erroneous belief that is holding me back?
